Last night,
I found myself in the mood for Italian. Apparently so did Suarez. Our tastes
slightly differ though for while Luis Suarez was taking a bite out of the
Italian defender Giorgio Chiellini during the World Cup game between Italy and Uruguay, I was
happily munching down on an artisan Italian pizza from Pizza E Porchetta.
Situated on
a cobblestone street (Clanwilliam Terrace) beside a small brick bridge along
the Grand Canal Quay is Pizza E Porchetta. The quaint pizzeria with both indoor
and outdoor seating is almost hidden away though it is not a secret as it is
regularly busy and is located in Dublin’s trendy and up and coming docklands area
close to Google's headquarters.
Our dining
experience started before we even entered. We were walking home when my lovely
girlfriend decided to send out a tweet to Pizza E Porchetta asking about their
special ‘Jug of Pimms and Pizza’ deal. Showing their savvy attitude towards
social media, we got an almost instantly reply letting us know their ‘Jug of
Pimms and any Pizza’ deal for €20 was from Wednesday – Friday but for us, they
would make an exception. How about that for service and marketing? Needless to
say, there was only one place we were heading for dinner. A big thank you to whoever decided that!
With a good
choice of pizzas to choose from, we selected the Al Crudo – a tomato, porcini,
parma ham and buffalo mozzarella pizza, and dined in at the rustic pizzeria
with our jug of pimms. It was a tough choice as there were plenty of other
pizzas that we could have chosen from with the deal not hindering our choice of
selection. We didn’t even have to feel guilty about choosing pizza for dinner
as the jug of pimms was so full of fruit that it had to be healthy (right?).
Almost an
expert I would proclaim on pizza at this stage of my life with the amount I’ve
eaten around the world, the pizza from Dublin’s Pizza E Porchetta is certainly
up there as one of the best; 11” large makes it ideal for sharing or for
oneself, with a thin base, quality toppings and cooked in a 650° woodfired
oven. I personally am a traditionalist and like to eat pizza with my hands and
while this is certainly possible, a knife and fork is probably the wiser
choice.
The €20 deal that we took advantage of represents exceptional value for a quality meal in Dublin. For those who love Italian as much as we do but don't fancy pizza, Pizza E Porchetta's menu is quite extensive and full of other options we're also eager to try. They also possess a takeaway menu, and are open for breakfast, lunch and dinner.
With a good
atmosphere, attentive staff, and quality food, this visit to Pizza E Porchetta carries on our
love affair with authentic, wood oven Italian pizza and we believe even Luis
Suarez would be tempted to take a bite out of these Italian dishes.
